The Chaparral 2F (002) driven by Phil Hill and Mike Spence set the fastest practice time at the 1967 Nurburgring 1000 Kms and briefly led the race until the automatic gearbox broke, a familiar story during the season. The rugged construction of the Chaparral with its sturdy wing and struts is a stark contrast to the flimsy, skeletal rubbish that adorned F1 cars in 1968/9.
