Pole setter John Surtees, Honda, lays a long rubber mark at the start, driving side-by-side with Bruce McLaren. Behind them Amon's Ferrari (white helmet, no. 9), Hill's Lotus and Ickx' Ferrari. Currently 6th is Denny Hulme (McLaren no. 1), followed by Jackie Stewart in his Matra no. 4.

Rubber marks and cracked armco barrier show the path of Rolf Stommelen's tragic accident caused by a rear wing failure. His Hill Cosworth then bounced back accross the track and flew over the barrier, killing five people and seriously injuring Stommelen. This accident marked the end of notorious Montjuich street circuit.

With Graham Hill and Gurney away in the lead, no. 1 Ken Miles (USA), 2nd on the grid in one of the many Ford's Mk II, is getting jumped at the start by John Whitmore's Ford no. 8, Mike Parkes' Ferrari (no. 20), Jo Bonnier's Chaparral-Chevrolet (no. 9) and Bondurant's Ferrari (no. 18). In the back you can see the no. 2 Ford of McLaren/Amon.

The Chaparral 2F (002) driven by Phil Hill and Mike Spence set the fastest practice time at the 1967 Nurburgring 1000 Kms and briefly led the race until the automatic gearbox broke, a familiar story during the season. The rugged construction of the Chaparral with its sturdy wing and struts is a stark contrast to the flimsy, skeletal rubbish that adorned F1 cars in 1968/9.
