Amidst all the heavy metal mayhem Porsche finished 4th and 5th at Le Mans. This is the 5th placed 2000 GT class winning factory 904GTS (091) of Gerhard Koch and Anton Fischhaber that completed 320 laps.

All the Ford GT40s retired at Le Mans due to stretched head bolts that led to head gasket failures on the 289 cubic inch (4.7 litre) engines. This is the F. English (a Bournemouth Ford dealership owned by Col. Ronnie Hoare of Maranello Concessionaires) chassis 1006 driven by Innes Ireland/John Whitmore in the Esses showing its distinctive Len Bailey redesigned nose. It is followed by the Klass/Glemser works Porsche 904/6 (906-12) and the Maranello Concessionaires Ferrari 250LM (5895) of L. Bianchi/Salmon.

The third placed Ford Mk II #1016 of Ronnie Bucknum (USA) and Dick Hutcherson (USA) passes the wreck of a retired racecars besides the track - car no. 14, the Ford GT40 #1040 driven by Peter Sutcliffe (GB) and Dieter Spoerry (CH)

The later 13th placed Porsche 911 S of Bernard Cheneviere (CH) and Björn Waldegaard (S) entered by Ecurie Jean Sage behind Raymond Touroul's (F) and André Anselme's (F) Porsche 911 S which wins in the GT+2.0 group (sixth overall)

German GP Hockenheim 1986 Start: While Stefan Johansson's Ferrari was nocked into a spin by Alliot collecting Fabi's Benetton as it went, Nelson Piquet (Williams-Honda no.6) takes 4th position ahead of Alain Prost in the McLaren, Patrese (Brabham-BMW) and the 2nd Williams of Mansell

Ludovico Scarfiotti's (I) and Gerhard Mitter's (D) Porsche 907 #030 retires in practice whilst the Porsche 911 T of Claude Haldi (CH), Pierre Greub (CH) and Edgar Berney (CH) passes the scene, it will later become 8th placed overall and wins in the GT2.0 class.

Pole setter John Surtees, Honda, lays a long rubber mark at the start, driving side-by-side with Bruce McLaren. Behind them Amon's Ferrari (white helmet, no. 9), Hill's Lotus and Ickx' Ferrari. Currently 6th is Denny Hulme (McLaren no. 1), followed by Jackie Stewart in his Matra no. 4.

75 cars started the Nurburgring 1000 kms and this picture starts with the 17th fastest Ford-France Ford GT40 (1003) of Henri Greder/Jean-Michel Giorgi that will finish 5th. Alongside is Heini Walter's Ferrari 250LM (5905) that he shared with Peter Ditzler and the number 82 Team VDS Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ 2 of Serge Trosch/Teddy Pilette. Two more Ford GT40s follow, the Ed Nelson/Peter de Klerk 1009 and Colin Crabbe's 1021 with its distinctive roof blister to accommodate Crabbe's height, co-driven by Roy Pierpoint. Further up the line can be glimpsed Paul Vestey's dark blue Ferrari 275GTB/C (9035) the ex-Maranello Concessionaires 1966 Le Mans car.

No. 64 is the BMW of Hans-Joachim Stuck (D), next to him Niki Lauda (A), also on BMW.

Ford's mechanical carnage at Le Mans included the Daytona Cobras as well and only the Jack Sears/Dick Thompson car (CSX2299) survived despite the damage shown here caused by a collision with an Alfa Romeo. Thompson approaches Tertre Rouge followed by the Rover-B. R. M. on his way to 8th place and 1st in the GT 5000 class.

The two following Porsches are Vic Elford (GB) and Richard Attwood (GB) on Porsche 908 LH 028 (car no 6) and Udo Sch¸tz (D) with Gerhard Mitter (D) on Porsche 908 LH 027 (car no. 5)
